Moral Dilemma

There is a beehive underneath my back steps. Currently it’s blocked off so the bees can’t get in or out. My mom has done this so that they won’t get into the house. On the one hand, I agree that they shouldn’t be in the house, because that would be a frustrating nuisance, but on the other hand… Fucking adorable little bees are all flustered because they can’t go home :(

So I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to incur the wrath of mother, but those bees, man, those bees! I would try moving the hive if it weren’t located under 1,000 pounds of concrete stairs. I could try, I suppose, but… Fuck, I don’t know.

Someone come magically teleport these bees to not here?

Otafest 2012

Well, after three days of nonstop awesome, Otafest 2012 has come to an end. While there were a few moments I didn’t fully enjoy, this was the best Otafest for me yet. It was the most fun I’ve had in years!

Friday was fantastic. Aside from waiting in the huge line, only to find out it was the wrong one, it was fucking doper than Snoop. Lix was pretty great, I really enjoyed their set. Plus the lighting shenanigans at the beginning were hilarious! And then LLOYD THE CONQUERER OH MY GOD!!! Everyone HAS to fucking see this movie, ESPECIALLY if you’re from Calgary (Fun Fact: the community college that it takes place in is my former elementary school. Now THAT was weird to see. So many precious memories…). That’s one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in a while. It was really cool that the writer and Brendan Hunter were there to answer questions. Who knew they were so truly, truly outrageous?

Saturday was nuts. I would have shown up at 10:00 AM sharp, only I had forgotten about the proud Otafest tradition known as “Calgary Transit C-Train Maintanence” so I didn’t arrive until noon. I perused the schedule, looking for an interesting panel, when I stumbled upon the lusus of all panels: The Homestuck Panel (which I have already covered in some detail). Needless to say, it was one of the main reasons why my Otafest experience was so great! Hopefully I will get my Bro Strider cosplay done and not be a lazy fuckass.

After getting lunch and chilling out, maxing, relaxing all cool, I went to the Cosplay Contest. Aside from having AN ENTIRE ROW OF SEATS TO MY QUIET, AWKWARD SELF, it was pretty fucking superb! And I didn’t walk out after the third rendition of “Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better” like last time, because no one performed it (seriously, never again guys, okay?)! I’m really glad I stayed, too, because there were some top-notch performances and costumes! My personal favourite was probably Vash, just because he was so entertaining, and he made Gareth uncomfortable, which was an added bonus. Hello Kitty also gets an honourable mention :3

After the Contest was wrapped up, I shambled on over to the AMV Room. Holy shit, was that like the best decision ever. Queen AMV’s, movie AMV’s, MOTHERFUCKING PONY AMV’S!! We watched one called the Pony Anthology, and I don’t think I’ve laughed that hard in quite awhile! Seriously, I think you should go watch it. I also ended up going to the My Little Brony panel, which was super swell. They discussed the show, brony culture, why they got into the show, and there’s even going to be an MLP expedition next year! Yay! After that, I headed back home via our great city’s lovely transit service. There’s just nothing like riding around downtown after midnight on a bus full otaku’s and drunkards.

Sunday… Sunday was beautiful. I got a ride (because I can’t drive because reasons), so I wasn’t 8,000 hours late! I got to go to the Maid Café early. I was served by a lovely little lass and I had cheesecake and… Tea.

[I’m going to sidetrack a little bit here and tell you about why this tea was significant for me. A few years back, I went to Europe over spring break. England was one of the countries I had the pleasure of visiting. While there, I went to a little café by my hotel for brunch. This was the first time I’ve ever had tea. This was also the last time I would ever have tea, until this Sunday at Otafest. It was the worst thing I’ve ever put in my mouth, which is saying a lot. It was piping hot right of the bat, so I burned the absolute shit out of my tongue, and it tasted like putrid ass-water. I put so much fucking sugar into that tea that it would no longer dissolve into the shit water. Maybe it was just bad tea. They didn’t get the bacon right over there, either. The hashbrowns were good, though!]

Anyways, this tea… Was fucking divine. I cannot recall the name (Strawberry Milk Tea?), but I would literally burn down my house for the recipe. It was so heavenly and warm and tasty and I think there was an actual piece of strawberry in the fucking tea and ohmygodicouldjustrambleonforeverabouthowfuckinggoodthisfuckingteawasholyshit… So, I guess what I’m getting at here is the tea was pretty choice.

After the Maid Café, I ventured once more over to the AMV room and watched the Otafest 2012 AMV Contest. It’s amazing how beautiful and funny and interesting they all were. I ended up voting for the second video shown (I think it was “Little Surfer Girl” by The Beach Boys, with footage from “5 Centimeters Per Second”). After this lengthy yet fascinating spectacle, went to the vendors and bought shirts, giant strawberry pocky, a pikachu bag for my sister and a gundam model for yer boyfriend. He loves Gundam Wing, but I got him a model of Gundam Unicorn’s RX-0 model Gundam Unicorn because fuck him, it’s the greatest fucking Gundam ever built.

Back to the AMV room, where I bore witness to AMV’s from yesterday and yesteryear. There is really more to AMV’s than I ever would have thought. The panelist was a pretty cool guy, I hope he comes back next year.

After more eating and chillaxing, I made my way over to the CJSW theatre and watched the fuck out of Gundam Unicorn, because as I have already mentioned, it’s the best Gundam. I’m going to have to find more of it and bone up.

Looking back on my Otafest experience, a thought occurs to me: nearly everything I’ve done this year I could have done at home. But that’s not why I go to Otafest. Oddly enough, the main reason I go is for the people. It’s nice to to actually get out and be around people who share your interests. It’s nice to be able to go out and be around thousands of people who dress up in costumes and watch anime and act and dance and paint and have fun. It’s nice to be able to do all this and feel normal for a weekend, instead of like a freak every other day of the year. Heck, I even managed to get a few more tumblr followers!

I loved Otafest this year, and I know I’m going to love it the next year and the next and the next! I want to thank everyone. Everyone who volunteered, everyone who showed up, who cosplayed, who interacted. Everyone who put in hours and days and weeks and months of effort to make the convention what it was. I can’t thank you enough for making Calgary such an awesome place to live.

But since I still have otafever, I’m going to go have to go down to Chinatown and bum around all day.

Cosplay ideas…?

At Otafest today, I was looking at the schedule when I noticed a peculiar, yet enticing event.

“The Homestuck Panel”

Intrigued, I ventured over to the brand new EEEL building (and holy shit is that building amazing), thinking I might see maybe a dozen or so fellow readers. When I arrived at the third floor, to my surprise, I was treated to the sight of maybe sixty or seventy homestuckers. There were trolls and kids everywhere (SO MANY DAVES)! I was shocked and elated to see so many happy grey faces.

Now being the HORRIBLY AWKWARD AND SHY person that I am, I beelined for the nearest area of solitude to chillax, waiting for the panel to begin. What a normal person would have done was converse with these great, godly people and forge new friendships. What I did, though, was hug up to the nearest wall, collapse to the floor, and focus intensely on my 3DS. If my eyes were capable of emitting energy, they would have been like a laser, and I would have ruined my handheld entertainment device.

Anyways, the panel was fantastic. The presenter really knew what they were talking about, and I felt that they captured many of the reasons why Homestuck is so incredible. Then we played games! It was fun! It would have been more fun for me of I had actually participated. Or talked. But, that’s not really the point of this.

I am amazed at how many people were there. I was amazed when I saw everyone treat everyone with kindness, with happiness.

I witnessed nearly a hundred people befriending one another. And it was amazing.

I am not a social butterfly. I’m not really an active member of the Homestuck community (or any community, for that matter). But after today, I think I’m going to try and change that. I don’t know how or when, but I want to get more involved. I want to be able to be merry and build friendships like I saw today. So, on that note, we can get to the actually intended topic of this post: I’m thinking of complying as Bro Strider for the next Otafest or Otalite.

The reason? Well, Bro Strider is best pony, first of all. Another reason is that most of the homestuckers I saw were, well, adorably short, so I think I can pull off being the towering master of puppet-dong and swordplay. Plus, I can be fast on my feet, it’s in my weight range, I don’t have to really talk, I flourish when I’m anonymous, and… Well, fuck you, that’s why. So, I think that’s what I’m gonna do!

So, to end this off, I wanted to say thank you to all the homestuck fans and a special thank you to the wonderful presenter! And, well, sorry for not saying a word to anyone, I guess.
